“Did you see the two guys in the Crown Vic?” Tallon asked.

“Sure did,” Pauling replied as they walked from the Cadillac they’d just turned over to the valet, toward the high-rise where Veronica lived.

The Chicago air was crisp and cool. It felt almost dense to Tallon after being out West for the past few weeks. Now, he was in a concrete canyon as they said. Huge buildings towered over everyone, casting the streets in shadow, the wind funneled between them, accelerating into a man-made battering ram.

People walked with their shoulders hunched forward, as if they were expecting someone or something to clobber them from behind.

Tallon didn’t have anything against cities per se, in fact, he often had a helluva good time when he was in one, but for daily living he preferred the wide open spaces.

Take the two hoods in the Crown Vic. They were either cops, detectives, private security or thugs. Maybe a combination of all four. Tallon wondered if they were here to provide security for the former Mrs. Morticelli, but discarded the idea. They didn’t look like Feebies. He knew hired muscle when he saw it and that was his best guess on the guys in the Crown Vic.

Tallon followed Pauling inside and let her handle the information desk. Soon, they each had a visitor pass and were taking the elevator to the penthouse floor.

The doors opened and they entered a marble foyer with white leather and steel couches encircling a set of large, wooden French doors.

Two armed guards stood outside the doors.

Clearly, they had been watching them via video and monitoring their arrival because one of them turned and opened the doors.

Revealed in the doorway was a woman who reminded Tallon of a young Raquel Welch.

She had wavy brown hair, beautiful dark eyes and a body full of curves and wicked promises.

Whew, Tallon thought. Talk about a presence.

“Good to see you again, Lauren,” the woman said. Her voice was as smooth and silky as her curves.

“You too, Victoria,” Pauling replied. She turned to Tallon. “This is my partner, Michael Tallon.”

Tallon shook Victoria’s hand, surprised by the strength of her grip. She had an expression of curiosity and, he thought, a slight amusement. As if she’d been able to read his thoughts.

“Come inside please,” Victoria said.

They followed her and Tallon couldn’t help but notice the way she walked. The gentle sway of her hips was like an invitation, and he forced himself to stop thinking about Pauling’s client that way. He was here on business.

The apartment was monstrous – at least ten thousand square feet, if not more. There were floor-to-ceiling windows around the perimeter, offering views of the Chicago skyline and on one side, Lake Michigan.

Another pair of security guards flanked each end of the cavernous space.

What does she need us for? Tallon thought.

“Coffee?” Veronica asked.

“No thank you,” Pauling replied. They followed Veronica to a seating area composed of a loveseat and two chairs. Veronica took the center of the love seat and Tallon and Pauling each took a chair.
